His father Samuel was a ship owner and cloth manufacturer. Farmed in Edwards County from 1820 to 1823. Began merchandising career with business connections in London; New York; New Orleans; Pittsburgh; Philadelphia; St. Louis; Evansville, Indiana; Louisville, Kentucky; and Shawneetown, Illinois. Had extensive real estate holdings in Edwards County and western Illinois. Raised a Quaker, became vestryman of the first Protestant Episcopal church in Albion, St. John's. Affiliated with old line Whigs, Union supporter in the Civil War. Married Eliza Simpkins, daughter of William Simpkins, December 1825.
