Members of the Association were Civil War veterans of the Michigan Cavalry Regiment, 11th. The regiment was organized at Kalamazoo (Mich.) under Col. Charles E. Smith, and mustered on Dec. 10, 1863. On Sept. 22, 1865, the regiment was consolidated with the Michigan 8th Cavlary. It returned to Jackson (Mich.) on Sept. 28, 1865. During the Civil War, the 11th Regiment fought in Ken., Tenn., Va., and N. and S. Carolina. It notably drove off Confederate raider John Morgan and destroyed salt works in Saltville (Va.).
