Fernald began his career as a journalist and actor, and later became a stage manager and director. After serving in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve during World War II, Fernald, became a director of several theater groups and wrote several articles and books including "The Play Produced," "Destroyer from America," and "Sense of Direction."
