The Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) Forensic Society was formed in the spring of 1955. According to the organization's constitution, the purpose of the club was: to help the individual develop poise, vocal expression, and clear thinking; to instill, stimulate, and create interest in discussion, oratory, and debate; to cut across inter-departmental lines and foster better intra-school relations; and to stimulate friendly rivalry or competition between the Rochester Institute of Technology and other institutions of higher learning. When it originally formed, the group had sixteen members from seven different departments; however, by the end of its first year, all of RIT's ten colleges were represented on the team. The first members of the society were all male, as there was concern over the travel accommodations for a mixed team. Yet, the group planned to add women by the following year. The team competed in various competitions throughout the region. Team members participated in their first tournament on November 4, 1955 at Houghton College. Since the group was sponsored by the Faculty Wives of RIT, these women initially served as the judges for all home events. By 1965, the society was having difficulty sustaining itself financially. It is unclear when the group disbanded, but the last mention of the club seems to be in 1967.
