Walter Blue was born in Seward, Alaska. He obtained a bachelor's degree from Washington State College. He worked for the Alaska Rural Rehabilitation Corporation in Palmer. During World War II, Blue served as paymaster for the Army Transport Service in Seward. After the war, he taught at Seward High School until 1960. He left the state to obtain his master's degree in history at Hunter University in New York. He later returned to Seward and managed the Seward Broadcasting Station until the earthquake in 1964. He then moved to Anchorage where he taught history at Anchorage Community College. He also served as the command historian for the United States Army in Alaska. He retired in 1977.
