Author of plays, lyrics, and librettos, including that for Down in the valley, with music by Weill.

Originally conceived by Weill and Sundgaard as a radio opera in 1945 but revised by Weill three years later as a folk opera, the work achieved great and lasting success in the latter form. Sundgaard's other librettos (all for other composers) include Giants in the earth, The lowland sea, Sunday excursion, Cumberland fair, Gallantry, Promised valley, Brigham, Nobody's Earnest, The Greenfield Christmas tree, and The truth about windmills. He has written lyrics for at least nine songs.
