Came to LaSalle County Illinois in 1830 as an engineer on the Illinois and Michigan Canal, fought in the Black Hawk War, was elected LaSalle County surveyor in 1855 and helped raise the 53rd Illinois Infantry of which he was commissioned as Lieutenant and later promoted to Colonel before resigning due to injuries.
