The Franklin Club was organized by members of the Class of 1852 in 1848 "considering the importance of proficiency in the art of writing and public speaking [...] for the purpose of securing this end form a society..." Members presented an oration or an essay or participated in extemporaneous debate at the weekly meetings. The Philomathean Society was formed by the Clas of 1852 as sophomores, in 1850, along the same lines as the Franklin Club.
