Cary Club (Marion, Iowa)

The Cary Club was founded in 1878 and named after two 19th century poets and sisters, Alice and Phoebe Cary. The purpose of the club was the intellectual improvement of its members, which took the form of book reviews, discussions, and programs on historical subjects and current events. In 1898 and 1899 the members collaborated in writing a story entitled "Wrecked where we least expect: a story by the Cary Club."
