Suzanne Fisher Staples was born August 27, 1945, in Philadelphia, PA. She became a news correspondent and editor, with much experience in India and the Far East. She began writing in the late 1980s, and her novels about adolescent girls from around the world have been well-recieved, in part because of their portrayals of cultures unfamiliar to Americans. Her first book, Shabana, Daughter of the Wind, published in 1989, received a Newbery Honor. Biographical Sources: Something About the Author, vols. 70, 105, 151 Children's Literature Review, vol. 60.
