Arkansas. Auditor of State

An act of the Arkansas General Assembly passed 1 Apr. 1891 allowed for the granting of pensions to Arkansas' former Confederates and their widows. Arkansas was one of the first states to provide for their Confederate veterans. The act created a State Board of Pensions with seventy-five local pension boards, one in each county. These boards oversaw the granting of pensions. Almost 50,000 Arkansans received pensions for Confederate service under this program which was administered from 1891 until 1939, the creation of the State Dept. of Public Welfare. After 1939 the Dept. of Public Welfare administered pension activity.

The Auditor of State is one of seven constitutional officers in Arkansas. The Auditor acts as the general accountant for the State, keeping track of all fund and appropriation balances of all state agencies, and writing the warrants (checks) in payment of the liabilities of the State.
