Mr. Kelley grew up along the Mississippi Gulf Coast and graduated from Mississippi Southern College in 1940. After service in the U.S. Army Air Force, he earned his Ph. D. from the University of Nebraska. In 1955, he returned to his alma mater, renamed The University of Southern Mississippi, and chaired the newly created Geography Department. After 25 years of service, he retired in 1980.
