William S. Mellen of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, was general manager of the Wisconsin Central Railway Company. He was traveling with his daughter, Gertrude, from Chicago to Washington when their train was trapped in the Johnstown (Pennsylvania) Flood on May 31, 1889.
