The East Florida Seminary was established in 1853 to provide public education to students in eastern Florida. The seminary was opened in Ocala and moved to Gainesville in 1866. The school was abolished in 1905. During most of its history, the seminary provided secondary education. By 1905, the curriculum had been expanded to include lower level college work. The University of Florida traces its origins to the establishment of the seminary.
