Chunn/Land family.

Hide Profile

Elizabeth Word Chunn (1820-1894) came from South Carolina and lived with her husband, Samuel L., and son, William Augustus Chunn (1840-1921), in Cassville, GA. The mother of only one child, she apparently served as a beloved authority figure for hundreds of people whose letters comprise much of this collection. Her son continued farming their property after his father died in 1863 and he himself had returned from the Civil War. In 1860 he had married Martha Delilah (Lila) Land, daughter of Nathan Land (1812-1880), a farmer and lawyer, who had moved his family from Twiggs to Cass County in 1848 and served as Cass (later Bartow) County Ordinary. Many of the Land children maintained and increased their ties in Twiggs County.
