Newberry, Oliver, 1789-1860.
Born in East Windsor,Conn., Nov. 17, 1739; served in War of 1812 and Black Hawk War; settled in Buffalo, N. Y., 1816; removed to Detroit, 1820; secured government contracts for supplies for forts in the region; became prominent shipbuilder; built his first steamboat, the "Michigan" in 1833 and several warehouses on Detroit river front; was elected an alderman, 1831; died in Detroit, July 30, 1860.
