Bettis Academy (Trenton, S.C.)
Grammar school, high school, and junior college located near Trenton (Edgefield County, S.C.); founded 1881 by Alexander Bettis; incorporated 1889; dedicated to the education of African Americans through "spiritual, mental, and industrial training"; ca. 1940, institution enjoyed the support of the Society of Friends, or Quakers; although covers of the school's catalog included the phrase, "accredited as a junior college, June 1933," it was not until 1945 that the institution's name began to appear on the bulletin as "Bettis Academy and Junior College"; the institution closed in 1951.
