John Dean Gillett followed his uncle John Gillett from Connecticut to Logan County, Illinois, eventually settling in Elkhart where he became the owner of large amounts of land, and a hog and cattle dealer. He and his wife Lemira Parke Gillett had 1 son and 7 daughters, one of whom, Emma, became the wife of Illinois Governor Richard J. Oglesby.
