Initially a non-commissioned officer in Col. William Presscott's Regiment (May-Dec. 1775) and therefore likely a participant at Bunker Hill, Bancroft became an Ensign in the 7th Continental Infantry in 1776, and eventually First Lieutenant in the 15th Massachusetts before he died in service.
