Born in Sögel near Aschendorf, Emsland, in what today is the German state of Niedersachsen, in 1834. Daughter of the judge and historical writer Paul Modestus Schücking, and his second wife Anna Gesina Sophia Ottilia Brück; stepdaughter of the poet Katharina Sibylla Schücking, and stepsister of the author Levin Schücking. In 1861 married the Baltimore businessman and later author Emil Sutro (1832-1906), with whom she had become acquainted during a visit in the United States. At a later point they lived in Philadelphia, and moved to New York in 1900. Sutro-Schücking died in New York in 1910.
