Micropaleontologist William Rex Riedel was born in Tanunda, South Australia on September 5, 1927. He was educated at the University of Adelaide, receiving B.Sc. (1947), M. Sc. (1952) and D.Sc. (1976) degrees. From 1951-1995 he was associated with the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UCSD, beginning as graduate research geologist and retiring as senior lecturer. Riedel has been distinguished for his work on stratigraphy of radiolaria in particular and marine sedimentation in general.
