Bright began working with computers in the 1950s while chief of the laboratory instrumentation branch at the Radiological Defense Laboratory. He later worked at the Westinghouse Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory, the Office Equipment Manufacturers Institute, the computer and electronics division of Philco Corporation, and Informatics, Inc., before founding Computation Planning, Inc. (COMPLAN) in 1966. After 1975, COMPLAN concentrated on cryptographic protection for corporate data. From 1963-1966, Bright worked on standards for the FORTRAN programming language. He was also active on several other computer industry standards committees relating to the programming languages COBOL and APT, and later, encryption. He held several positions in the Association for Computing Machinery and served.

on the American Federation of Information Processing Societies board of directors and its Electronic Transfer of Funds committee. Bright was also active in computer user groups including SHARE, an IBM user group. After founding COMPLAN, Bright joined the Association of Independent Software Companies and later became its president and a member of the board of directors.
