Washington Pickens Nance was born in Russellville, Ala., on Dec. 10, 1824. Before the Civil War he was a farmer and local merchant in Russellville. He married Louisa Lawler, 1831-1894, of Huntsville (Ala.) and had seven children. On Jan. 1, 1864, he enlisted for two years in Company I of the 10th Alabama Cavalry which was later designated as the 11th Alabama Cavalry. While enlisted he fought in the battles of Brice's Crossroads (Miss.) and Harrisburg or Tupelo (Miss.) After the Battle of Harrisburg Nance traveled with the regiment's horses through Columbus, Miss., Selma, Ala., Montgomery, Ala., and Columbiana, Ala., to a point near Huntsville, Ala. On Dec. 23, 1864, he was captured during a skirmish near Indian Creek and Tuscumbia, Ala. He was sent by train to Camp Chase near Columbus, Ohio. He arrived at camp on Jan. 11, 1865, and died there on March 18, 1865.
