De Jong was born in The Netherlands in 1910 and came to Grand Rapids (Mich.) as a child in 1918. He attended Grand Rapids Christian High School and received his B.A. from Calvin College. During World War II, he served three years as a sergeant and historian for Gen. Chennault's 14th Air Force in China. In 1962, De Jong won the Hans Christain Anderson Award, the first American to do so. Five of his books won the Anderson Award. In 1954 he was awarded the Newberry Medal. On two other occassions, he was runner-up for the Newberry. De Jong also won the 1956 annual Children's Book Award of the Child Study Association of America. His books weretranslated into 21 languages and he won many awards. De Jong's last book, the Easter Cat, which also won an Anderson Award, was published in 1991. De Jong died in 1991. Meindert DeJong was born March 4, 1906 in Wierum, Netherlands. Coming to America, he studied at Calvin College in Michigan. He began writing children's books in the 1930s, publishing his first book, The Big Goose and the Little White Duck in 1939. In served in the United States Army in China during WWII, and continued his writing career after the war. In 1955 he won the Newbery Award for The Wheel on the School. Love of nature, and children's capabilities and sentiments, are themes which recur throughout many of DeJong's works. He retired from writing in 1986, and died in Allegan, Michigan on July 16, 1991.
