Attorney, plantation owner, and governor of S.C., 1783-1785, of Charleston, Goose Creek, and St. Helena Island, S.C.; Guerard served as a member of the South Carolina Privy Council from 1782 to 1785, and in February 1783 became Governor of South Carolina; married, 1766, to first wife Sarah Middleton, and later, 1786, he wed Marianne Kennan.
