John Jacob Sawyer, son of Thomas P. and Ann L. Sawyer, was a physician from New York who came to Calif. ca. 1868. He practiced in Sierra City, Sierra County, where he maintained a private practice, as well as being a surgeon for the Sierra Buttes Mine and the Marguerite Mine. His wife, Maria L. Glass Sawyer, was traffic manager of the Philippine Telegraph and Telephone Company in Manila. Their daughter, Anna M. Sawyer Hargis, was a dentist who practiced in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Honolulu, and Manila.
