Joseph Beaumont (1616-1699) was born at Hadleigh, Suffolk, on 13 March 1616. He attended the grammar school in Hadleigh before joining Peterhouse, Cambridge, in 1631 (B.A., 1634; M.A. 1638), where he became a Fellow in 1636. He was ejected from Cambridge in 1644 for his royalist sympathies, and became canon of Ely in 1646. Beaumont was appointed domestic chaplain to Matthew Wren, Bishop of Ely, in 1650, and D.D. and chaplain to the King in 1660. He became Master of Jesus College, Cambridge, in 1662, and of Peterhouse in 1663. He was Regius Professor of Divinity at Cambridge from 1674. He died on 23 November 1699.
