Tech 5 William Auerbach was born on 14 August 1914. He attended Harvard Law School and was working as a general practice attorney in New York City when he enlisted in the U.S. Army on 23 June 1943. Auerbach completed antiaircraft artillery basic training and served as a cryptanalysis technician, and then as a technical writer with the Research and Analysis Branch, Office of Strategic Services (OSS). He also attended the Signal Intelligence School. Auerbach served in China, studying confidential intelligence and writing reports. He separated from the Army on 10 February 1946.
