Hide Profile

The AFL chartered the Journeymen Barbers' International Union in 1888. The union grew steadily and soon included hairdressers, manicurists, and cosmetologists. To reflect these changes the union became the Journeymen Barbers, Hairdressers, and Cosmetologists International Union of America in 1941, adding Proprietors in 1957. In the 1970s the union renamed itself the Barbers, Beauticians, and Allied Industries International Association before being absorbed by the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union in 1980.
