Family of Joseph Story Fay who was born in Cambridgeport, Mass., and died in Boston; cotton merchant, industrialist, and businessman; active in cotton shipping business in Savannah, Ga. (1827 and 1837- 1861) where he was involved with Padelford, Fay & Company; was involved with whaling in New Bedford, Mass., and thus became familiar with Woods Hole, Mass., where he purchased a summer home. In later years he spent less time in Savannah and became more involved with textile mills in Lowell, Mass., as well as becoming benefactor to church and community of Woods Hole. He also was an active member of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society and had a consuming interest in roses leading to his enthusiastic support of the Fay Rose Garden in Woods Hole which was originally developed by Michael Henry Walsh. Joseph Story Fay was convinced that the Vikings had visited Woods Hole and he convinced the Woods Hole post office to change the official name of the village to Woods Holl, which it remained until after his death in 1897.
