George B. Franks was born in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, on May 25, 1857, the son of Phineas and Nancy (Butler) Franks. During his childhood the family moved frequently, living in Ohio, Indiana, Iowa, and Missouri. At the age of 16, George headed to Montana, settling in Bozeman. For the next 12 years he was a freighter between Corinne, Bozeman, and Fort McLeod. In 1885 he began ranching at South Boulder in Madison County. He opened a butcher shop in Whitehall in 1892 and ran it for 3 years. He then sold it to Tinsley Brothers, but bought it back in 1900.George B. Franks married Ada Randall in 1888.
