Benjamin Franklin Scribner was born in New Albany, Indiana. Scribner alternated between careers as a military man and a druggist. He served with the 2nd Indiana Volunteers during the Mexican War, and with the 38th Indiana Volunteers during the Civil War. He also was a chemist and druggist in New Albany, Ind., in the firm of Scribner and Maginness, and later opened a branch in New York City. In 1865 he obtained an appointment as collector of internal revenue, and in 1878 was appointed treasury agent in Alaska.

Benjamin Franklin Scribner took part in the battle of Buena Vista during the Mexican War, when he served as a private in Company A of the 2nd Indiana Regiment of Volunteers. He published memoirs of his experiences in 1847 and 1850. During the Civil War he was the founding colonel of the 38th Indiana Infantry Regiment and fought with the Army of the Cumberland. After the war Scribner returned to private life and his pharmacy business, and from 1868-1880 he was an agent and collector for the U.S. Treasury.
