Edward Fontaine (1814-1884) was a minister and amateur naturalist.
Before joining the ministry, he attended West Point (1830-1832), was admitted to the bar, and served as a draftsman in Pontotoc, Mississippi. He became a Methodist minister in 1838 and served in Houston and Galveston, Texas. In 1841 he was private secretary to Republic of Texas President Mirabeau B. Lamar and informally preached in Austin. In 1843 he returned to Mississippi, where he was ordained an Episcopal minister in 1848. In 1851 he was rector of the Church of the Epiphany, later St. David's Church, in Austin. In 1859 he moved back to Mississippi, where he served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. He died at Belvidere, Mississippi, in 1884.
