Catlin, Amos P., 1823-1900.
Amos P. Catlin was a lawyer from New York State who came to California in 1849, engaged in mining operations in the Mormon Island area, and later formed the American River Water and Mining Co. and the Natoma Water and Mining Co. During the 1860s he was associated with the assay and banking firm of Charles T.H. Palmer and Roger S. Day. Catlin, a member of the California bar for many years, was influential in establishing the state capital of Sacramento. He was elected to the state senate in 1852 and judge of the Superior Court at Sacramento in 1890.

(Amos Parmalee Catlin (1823-1900) was born in Red Hook, N.Y. In 1844 he was admitted to the New York Bar Association and in 1848 formed a partnership with his cousin George Catlin. The following year he sailed on the brig "David Henshaw" for San Francisco. Upon his arrival, Catlin settled at Mormon Island and engaged in mining operations. He established the American River Water and Mining Company as well as the Natoma Water and Milling Company. Catlin was a prominent member of the California Bar, was elected to the state senate in 1852 and judge of the Superior Court at Sacramento in 1890, and was influential in establishing the capital at Sacramento.
