The Trades and Labor Assembly of Utica and Vicinity was founded in Utica, N.Y. in 1882 and was commonly and officially referred to as the Utica Trades Assembly. The Utica Trades Assembly (UTA), an affiliate of the A.F. of L. with delegates from the many local A.F. of L. unions of Utica, was a central labor body in which all affiliated local unions could act in concert. One UTA delegate was assigned for every 25 members of a local. The cigarmakers and bakers figure chiefly in the records as do UTA officers Alex Rosenthal, E.A. Bates, and E.B. Horton.
