Indiana University. University Council

The University Council was formed in 1929. The purpose of the group was to consider any question of academic policy affecting the University as a whole and had investigative, deliberative, and recommendatory powers. In 1947, a new Faculty Council was formed and the University Council was dissolved.

The University Council was created by a vote of the general faculty on 10 January 1929. The purpose of this group was to consider any question of academic policy affecting the University as a whole. It had investigative, deliberative and recommendatory powers only. The Council investigated questions presented to it by the administration, the faculty as a whole, or any individual member of the faculty. It would submit its findings and conclusions to the faculty. Recommendations and reports put forth by the University Council required formal approval from the general faculty in order to be presented to the Board of Trustees for action.

When the general faculty drafted a Faculty Constitution in April 1947 it created a Faculty Council to represent the interests of the general faculty with final approval of the Faculty Council’s legislative, administrative and juridical decisions pending 2/3 approval from the general faculty. The University Council was thereby officially terminated in Article VI, Section 40 of Faculty Constitution and its functions were taken over by the newly created Faculty Council.
