• 1843 Feb 15: Shimeta Niijima born Edo, Japan on the estate of Lord Itakura of Annaka, Kozukenokuni. Father Niijima Tamiji was recording secretary to Lord Itakura.
• 1861: Niijima enters Tokugawa Naval School, studies mathematics and navigation
• 1864: Niijima stows away on American Schooner
• 1865: The Wild Rover reaches Boston, Massachusetts. The Hardy family takes custody of Shimeta Niijima; he legally changes his name to Joseph Hardy Neesima
• 1866: Neesima baptized in a Congregational Church, Neesima attends Philips Academy Andover
• 1868: Neesima enters Amherst College
• 1870: Neesima graduates Amherst College
• 1874: Neesima awarded an LLD by the Andover Theological Seminary Neesima founds Doshisha University with Kakuma Yamamoto in Kyoto, Japan
• 1874 Sep 24: Neesima ordained, Boston, Massachusetts
• 1876 Jan 3: Neesima weds Yage Yamamoto, sister of Kakuma Yamamoto
• 1879: First commencement of Doshisha University, fifteen graduates
• 1887: Doshisha Hospital and nursing school open. (Closed 1906)
• 1889: Neesima awarded LL.D. by Amherst College
• 1890 Jan 23: Neesima dies near Tokyo, Japan
