Variant namesSince the early 20th century, various assistant superintendents in the state Dept. of Public Instruction (WIHV86-A116) have been in charge of teacher certification, curriculum, and supervision programs. About 1963 an Assistant Superintendent in Charge of Instructional Services was created within the department. The Division for Instructional Services was created in 1967 to provide overall supervision, consultation, and resource services for local school districts. In Wisconsin State Archives' database entries, this form of the agency name is used for records created 1963-present.
The Division for Instructional Services has the responsibility for instructional and curriculum programs in the state's public elementary and secondary schools. The division administers several federal programs, including Vocational Education, Chapter 1, Bilingual, Migrant, Job Training Partnership Act, and Leadership in Educational Administrative Development. Major responsibilities include the development of curriculum materials, supervision of the improvement of programs at the local school district level, preparation/certification of teachers, statewide assessments, the state competency-based testing program, approval of summer school programs, and on-site audits of state standards.
