Francis Furse Vidal, eldest son of writer Mary Therese Vidal (Mrs Francis Vidal). Vidal spent five years of his childhood in Australia (1840-1845), upon return to England he went to school at Eton. He worked in a bank for a short time, then spent some time in Paris singing, before being appointed assistant to the general manager of a company in California which supplied water to gold mines. Vidal later returned to England where he studied at Cambridge University and then Cuddeston Theological College.
