Claus-M. Naske was born in 1935 in Stettin, Germany. He received an A.B. in History and Political Science in 1961 from the University of Alaska. In 1964, Naske received an M.A. in Modern European History from the University of Michigan. He taught grade school at the Bureau of Indian Affairs Day School in Barrow Alaska from 1964 to 1965. He was an instructor at Juneau-Douglas Community College teaching History and Political Science from 1965 to 1967. Naske was a Teaching Assistant at Washington State University where he received his Ph.D. in American History in 1970. He was an Assistant Professor at the University of Alaska Fairbanks from 1969 to 1972, and served as an Associate Professor at the University of Alaska from 1972 to 1981. In 1981, Naske was appointed a full professor of History, and in 1988 he added Executive Director of the University of Alaska Press to his responsibilities.
