Brown was born in Logan, Utah and grew up in Colorado, Illinois, and California. She attended Brigham Young University, where she took time off to serve a proselytizing mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Berlin, Germany. She returned to Brigham Young University after her mission, where she pursued a Masters in English and married her husband.
