Margery "Jerry" Downey was born in Poughkeepsie, New York. She received her BA in English Literature from Swarthmore College in 1950 and between 1969 and 1970, went on to take a number elementary education courses in New Jersey. She has worked as a junior executive in a department store, an assistant to her physician father, teachers aide (1969-1974), for a life insurance company (1980-1983), and as a sales and customer service representative for Service Foods, Inc. Downey was involved with ERA Georgia during the 1970s and 1980s and has been a long time member of the League of Women Voters in Montclaire, N.J. and in Savannah, Georgia. She has served as president and education chair. For some time, she has been a member of the Older Women's League, and continues to work with them on various projects.
