Born John Harberger, and known variously as John Pico John; John P. John; and Mr. John, Mr. John was world famous in the 1940's and 1950's for his millinery designs. His clients included film, stage, and opera stars, including Lauren Bacall, Gloria Vanderbilt, Gloria Swanson and the Duchess of Windsor. He designed hats for Gone With the Wind, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, and The Painted Veil. In 1928, he worked briefly with Frederic Hirst under the John-Frederics label. Mr. John also launched a line of jewelry and stockings.
