A native of Tennessee, Joseph J. Dickson (b. ca. 1830-1862) moved with his parents Joseph D. Dickson and Sarah Latimer around 1833 to Red River County, Texas, where they settled in what became Clarksville. He married Sarah S. Epperson in 1856, and the couple had four children. In 1861, Dickson enlisted in the 9th Texas Infantry Regiment of the Confederate Army, serving as a captain of Company F until he was killed a year later on the first day of the battle of Shiloh.
