The Capitol Reconstruction Commission was established in 1935 for the purpose of planning the construction of a new captiol building in Salem, Oregon to replace the one that burned in 1935.

Construction began in 1936 and was completed in 1938. Most of the funding for the building was provided by the Public Works Administration.
