Luther Bradley was born in New Haven, Connecticut in 1853. His family moved to Chicago in 1857. In 1875, after Yale College he went into the real estate firm Baird and Bradley in which his father was a partner. Seven years later Luther Bradley left the business and that year (1882) sailed for Australia on the Lammermoor. He landed in Melbourne and worked as a cartoonist for Australian Tidbits and later Melbourne Punch. He stayed in Australia for eleven years returning home to Chicago on the death of his father. In 1899 he joined the staff of the Chicago Daily News and a year later was appointed director of the art department. He worked for the Daily News until his death in 1917.
