Teller Lutheran Church (Teller, Alaska)

Hide Profile

Teller is a town made up of Eskimos who moved there from other villages during the gold rush days. The date for organization is 1949, but work there began many years before, about the same time as the Brevig Mission in 1894. Missionaries from Brevig often serve the people of Teller. The church has had a colorful past. It began as a saloon and restaurant during the gold rush of the late 1800s, and for many years was used as a warehouse before being sold to the church. Teller has a modern school and community center which was erected by the government.
