Verne James McCaul (b. Aug. 18, 1903, Ayr, North Dakota-d. March 2, 1968, San Diego, California), Lieutenant General in the U.S. Marine Corps, was commissioned in the Marines in 1925 and earned his wings in 1930. As World War II began, his Marine Fighter Squadron 221 went to the South Pacific and later joined Marine Aircraft Group 22, with McCaul as executive and operations officer during the Battle of Midway in 1942. After duty on the staff of the commander in chief of the U.S. Fleet, he returned to the Pacific Theater of Operations as chief of staff of aircraft for the Northern Solomons. Following the War, General McCaul became commanding general of the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing in Korea, and later was appointed assistant commandant of the Marine Corps until his retirement in 1960.
