Douglas Hague was born in Yorkshire in April 1930. He grew up in Watford and attended the Polytechnic, Regent Street, studying Building and Advanced Building from 1946 to 1949. From 1949 to 1963 he worked as a surveyor for various building contractors and engineers. At the same time he taught building construction on a part-time basis at the Polytechnic, Regent Street, Watford Techncial College, Nottingham and District Technical College and North Gloucestershire Technical College. He also studied Design Theory and Practice at Brighton School of Building, 1956-57.

In 1965 Hague was appointed Lecturer in Building Technology in the Faculty of Building at the Leicester College of Art. He remained at the College as it became Leicester Polytechnic, acting as Course Leader of the HND (Higher National Diploma) in Building for over 12 years. Hague retired in the mid-1990s, only to return to De Montfort University to pursue a PhD on "The Automatic Classification of Building Maintenance" (1997). In 1977 he had gained an MSc on "Type, frequency, duration of building maintenance tasks" from UMIST (University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology).

In addition to his teaching duties Hague was active within the Chartered Institute of Building, acting as Chair for the East Midlands Region, 1989-90, Trustee of the CIOB Benevolent Fund, 2001-04, and author of a CIOB Education Framework Textbook, Building Production Management Techniques (co-authored with Dr David Moore, 1999). He was the recipient of an Ian Murray Leslie Award Commendation and a Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee scholarship. He was also Chairman of the Standing Committee for HNDs in Building.

Hague died in December 2011.
