Biographical/Historical Sketch

Stanford University President Emeritus Richard W. Lyman founded the Institute for International Studies in 1988 and was its director until August 1991. The Institute brings experts from a variety of disciplines within the university together with long- and short-term visitors from other academic, government, and corporate institutions to study contemporary policy issues. Research is focused primarily on international security, the global environment, and international political economy. Research programs include the Northeast Asia-United States Forum on International Policy, the Center for International Security and Arms Control, the Americas Program, the Asia/Pacific Research Center, and the Stanford Japan Center-Research, located in Kyoto. The institute also oversees teaching programs and five area centers for African, East Asian, European, Latin American, and Russian and East European studies.

Biographical/Historical Sketch

Richard W. Lyman was Stanford's seventh president, serving from September 1970 to the summer of 1980. He first came to Stanford in 1958 to teach in the history department; he served as vice president and provost from 1967 to 1970. Under Lyman's leadership, the university first embarked on rigorous cost control and budget-cutting programs, and then on the ambitious "Campaign for Stanford" to raise $300 million. The successful five-year drive raised $132 million for the university's endowment and additional funds for buildings, endowed chairs and student financial aid. Lyman's tenure also saw an increase in the numbers and influence of women and members of ethnic minorities as faculty and students. During the summer of 1980, Lyman left Stanford to become president of the Rockefeller Foundation.
